Giving it the Old College Try
According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s most recently published Patient Registry Report, nearly 60% of people with cystic fibrosis obtain a college education. There are a number of scholarship programs available to help fray the costs of higher education. The Servers is pleased to announce that two of CysticFibrosis.com's members have received scholarships from the Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship Foundation (CFSF).
By providing financial aid, the CFSF gives many young adults with CF opportunities they may not have had otherwise. Relieving some of the financial pressures of college tuition, allows the student more time to study, keep up their health, and enjoy the overall college experience. For a complete list of recipients of the CFSF awards, please visit CFScholarship.org, or the CFSF's summer 2007 newsletter.
Although she’s been busy with a new part-time job as well as gearing up for a fully loaded first semester, Rebecca C. was kind enough to share some of her background with us and let us know what she’ll be up to once classes begin.
The Servers (TS): "How did you find out about the CFSF program?"
Rebecca C. (RC): "I was told about it by a teacher with CF who also received the scholarship one year."
TS: "Where will you enroll?"
RC: "I am going to a community college for my basics, then will transfer to a bigger university in Texas."
TS: "Have you chosen a major?"
RC: "My plan at this point is to double major in biology and English.
TS: "Will you be working and going to school?"
RC: "I will be attending school 3 days a week, working two days and sleeping in the rest!"
It’s not too early to submit an application to the CFSF for financial aid in the 2008-2009 academic year. Applications are available online, and scholarships will be awarded in April, 2008.
Congratulations to all our CysticFibrosis.com members who are pursuing higher education. We wish you the best. Study hard and be well!
